Painting created during van Gogh's stay at the psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. It depicts lush, intensely blue and purple irises. Van Gogh took up painting to prevent a mental breakdown, and this work was made before his first attack in the hospital. The painting received positive reception at the Salon des Indépendants exhibition and became one of his most valued works.
