Stefan Gierowski (1925–2022)
Painter of light and color vibrations, one of the most important representatives of Polish abstraction.
Joanna Piotrowska - Art Advisor & Marszand
Stefan Gierowski was a renowned Polish abstract painter born in 1925 in Częstochowa and passed away in 2022. He was educated at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow and was influential in the development of Polish contemporary abstract painting. His works are characterized by Roman-numbered 'Obrazy' series, focusing on texture and color interaction, blending styles like informel, unism, and post-constructivism.
Born in Częstochowa and raised in Kielce in an intellectual family with artistic and patriotic traditions. Studied underground art lessons during WWII, then attended the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts and Jagiellonian University studying art history and painting. Learned under notable artists such as Zbigniew Pronaszko and Karol Frycz.
After graduating in 1948, worked in Kielce's Cultural Department and then in Warsaw for arts magazines. Started gaining recognition from 1955 with awards and participation in exhibitions like the Arsenał. From the late 1950s, his art shifted toward abstraction and developed a distinctive style involving numbered paintings.
Began teaching painting in architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1961, later opening his own studio with a focus on color and painting types. He mentored numerous notable Polish artists. Served as dean and was elected rector (though prevented from serving) at the Academy. Active in Solidarity and cultural committees.
Participated in major international exhibitions including Paris Biennale, São Paulo Biennale, Venice Biennale, and showcased in NYC's MoMA. His works are part of major national museums in Poland and collections worldwide. Received many awards including the Jan Cybis Award (1980) and Kazimierz Ostrowski Award (2005).
