Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was a Dutch Golden Age painter, printmaker, and draughtsman regarded as one of the greatest visual artists in Western art history. His prolific oeuvre includes about 300 paintings, 300 etchings and several hundred drawings, characterized by his skillful use of chiaroscuro, portrayals of human drama and mastery of emotive self-portraits.
Born in Leiden to a miller’s family, Rembrandt trained under Jacob van Swanenburg and Pieter Lastman, developing skills in drawing and painting. He established his own studio in Leiden with friend Jan Lievens before gaining recognition in Amsterdam.
After moving to Amsterdam, Rembrandt became a successful portrait painter, marrying Saskia van Uylenburgh. He produced important works such as 'The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp' and 'The Night Watch', gaining prestigious commissions and patrons.
Despite personal tragedy including the deaths of his wife and children, and financial difficulties leading to bankruptcy, Rembrandt continued to create varying styles from detailed to looser brushwork, impacting art deeply with works like 'Bathsheba at Her Bath' and 'The Jewish Bride'.
Rembrandt produced masterful etchings and drawings alongside paintings, experimenting with techniques such as drypoint and surface tone. His late self-portraits are renowned for reflecting psychological depth and aging.
