Painting created after Renoir's trip to Italy, where he began to explore a new approach to painting, partially abandoning impressionist outdoor painting. It depicts a woman, his then partner Aline Charigot, sitting by the seashore, likely near Dieppe in Normandy. The painting features clear contours and modeling of the figure, as well as subtle play of light and shadow.
