The Rothko Chapel is an ecumenical chapel in Houston, Texas, founded by John and Dominique de Menil, opened in 1971. The interior serves not only as a place of prayer but is also an important work of modern art. Fourteen paintings by Mark Rothko in black but colorful tones are hung on its walls. The building's shape is an octagon inscribed in a Greek cross, and the chapel's design was largely inspired by the artist's vision. The paintings represent Rothko's late creative period, characterized by the dominance of black and other dark shades and texture effects. The chapel became the world's first ecumenical place open to all denominations and is a place of prayer as well as cultural and philosophical meetings.
