Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519)
Renaissance man – painter, scientist, inventor.
Style: Renaissance. Combined ideal proportions, anatomical precision, and delicate chiaroscuro (sfumato).
Technique: His paintings—like Mona Lisa and The Last Supper—are world icons. He obsessively studied the human body, nature, and mechanics.
Fun fact: Left behind hundreds of notebooks full of sketches, thoughts, and mirror writing codes.
For today: Leonardo reminds us that greatness comes from curiosity. He bridges art and science—patron of the erudite.

Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci (1452–1519) was an Italian polymath of the High Renaissance, renowned as a painter, draughtsman, engineer, scientist, anatomist, and inventor. Famed for iconic works such as the Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, and Vitruvian Man, he epitomised Renaissance humanism through his diverse artistic and scientific achievements.
Born out of wedlock in Vinci, Leonardo was apprenticed to Andrea del Verrocchio’s workshop in Florence, where he learned artistic and technical skills that shaped his early career. He was exposed to Renaissance humanist ideals and contemporary innovations in art and science.
Leonardo worked in Florence and Milan, completing major works like The Adoration of the Magi (unfinished), Virgin of the Rocks, The Last Supper, and developing engineering projects for Ludovico Sforza. He also studied anatomy and natural science in depth.
In the final years, Leonardo lived in Rome and then France under Francis I. He continued scientific research, created numerous sketches, and produced variations on famous themes like Saint John the Baptist and The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne.
Leonardo is considered a supreme genius whose innovative techniques and artworks have had an enduring impact on Western art and science. His notebooks reveal vast explorations of anatomy, engineering, and natural phenomena beyond his paintings.
