Ewa Juszkiewicz (born 1984)

An expositor of art history, she is the author of ironic and baroque portraits that inspire anxiety and fascination.

Style and technique: Classical, masterful oil painting – hyperrealism along the lines of the old masters. Her portraits are reminiscent of 18th century paintings, but with surrealistic interference – instead of faces: braids, hair, shells, flowers.
Topics: woman in art history. Her works are a critique of patriarchal iconography – showing how women were stripped of their identities, depicted as beautiful “objects.”
Secrets and Curiosities:
- Her painting “Portrait of a Lady (After Louis Leopold Boilly)” was sold for more than $1.5 million – she is one of the highest valued living Polish artists.
- She is fascinated by fashion, nature and the history of painting – each painting is a dialogue with a specific work from the past.
- She never shows his face – because, she says, she “wants to focus attention on what is left out.”
What does it tell us today? Art can be a tool for dismantling old narratives. Juszkiewicz creates beauty that speaks of violence – in a very subtle but moving way.

Biography

Ewa Juszkiewicz is a Polish painter and contemporary artist known for her surreal portraits of women, in which faces are replaced by elements such as rolled-up fabric, flowers or shells. Graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk and a doctoral student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. Her works have gained international recognition and high prices at auctions.

Education

She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk in the studio of Prof. Maciej Swieszewski. She is continuing her doctoral studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow.

Career development

In 2009, she received a special award in Hestia's Artistic Journey competition. In 2014, she was included in the book 100 Painters of Tomorrow, as well as the Compass of Young Art.

Auction successes

Her paintings are sold at world auctions for record amounts, including the painting 'Maria (After Johannes Cornelisz Verspronck)' sold for more than £350,000, and 'Portrait of a Lady' for more than $1.5 million.
