Interrogation in Cafe Mozaika from the Sportsmen series, 1983
The painting 'Interrogation in Cafe Mozaika' comes from the 'Sportsmen' series, consisting of 274 works created between 1972-1992, which is one of Edward Dwurnik's most famous and valued projects. This series is an ironic, caricatured portrait of the society of the Polish People's Republic (PRL), with special focus on types of the national proletariat such as cigarette smokers called 'Sports'. The work illustrates the atmosphere and scene of an interrogation in the famous Warsaw cafe Mozaika, known as a meeting place for artists and Security Service officers. Although the artist himself mentioned that the interrogations were more staged, the painting presents the sociological context of those times in Dwurnik's typical ironic style.
