One of a series of about 25 paintings depicting haystacks left in the field after the harvest. Monet began painting the series in late summer 1890 and continued it until the following spring, using the harvests from around his home in Giverny, France. In these paintings, the variability of light and color at different times of the year, day, and weather was more important than the haystacks themselves. These works are among the artist's most important and are found in museums and private collections worldwide.
